  5.     With the communist world changing so rapidly, what's a
  6. sixth-grade social-studies student in North Carolina to do?
  7. After events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall outpaced many
  8. questions on a statewide current-events test, officials decided
  9. it would be too expensive to update it. Instead they admonished
  10. students: "Do not think about the recent governmental changes
  11. that have occurred in the past few months when you choose your
  12. answers to the questions about Eastern Europe."

  14.     That angered teachers, who argued that the policy would
  15. undermine their efforts to keep students abreast of history in
  16. the making. After an outcry in the media, school officials
  17. dashed off a new version of the test to the printers in time
  18. for the April examination. Now a student who says Soviet
  19. citizens can vote for "candidates of their choice" will be
  20. credited with the correct answer.
